This Monday, May 28th, is Memorial Day! In honor of all our men and women who lost their lives fighting for our freedoms, we take the day to celebrate their memory. With this celebration, comes social events, large gatherings, and often: difficult health decisions.  You may be attending parties with unhealthy foods choices and too much alcohol. Here are a few tips to help you stay on track towards your fitness goals through the long weekend:

Plan an outdoor activity

Celebrate the day by taking it outdoors! Spend the day doing something active in the sun such as swimming, hiking, or biking. This is a great weekend to plan a day at the beach, take a boating trip, or try out a new running trail. Memorial Day is the unofficial start of the summer season. What better way to kick off the summer than enjoying the weather outdoors?

If you are hosting a get-together, plan to load up the grill with healthy proteins, fruits and veggies! Break away from the traditional burgers and hot dogs, and get creative with grilled salads, skewers, and other original dishes. Check out these recipes at EatingWell for inspiration!

Play Games

When attending social gatherings, we often find ourselves hovering around the snack table while catching up with friends. Instead of just sitting around, liven up the party by adding some friendly competition to the mix. Play cornhole, basketball, horseshoes, touch football, or any other activity that you enjoy! Here is list of fun activities from Family Education to help get your party moving!

If you are attending a gathering, offer to bring a dish! Chose a healthy recipe that ensures that you will have a quality entrée or snack regardless of what the other food options are.

Regardless of what your holiday plans are, keep in mind the reason we celebrate on this day. As much as we enjoy the long weekend, this holiday isn’t about the parties.  It’s a time to remember all the sacrifices that have been made for our country. While attending events this weekend, focus on your company, and not the food and alcohol. By doing this, you will be sure to stay on track with your fitness goals and make lasting memories with your loved ones!
