A training session with me would focus on a personal history, age, injuries, surgeries, abilities, concerns, expectations and goals. I like to do a wellness survey using a holistic approach to health, looking at the whole person, as mentioned above, including recent doctor’s orders and personal fears or concerns. Especially with elderly clients, many many factors may go into their willingness to participate in a program of change that requires work. Therefore after personal intentions are clarified, I would like to see their ability, by guiding them through some gentle exercises to determine their “reaction” to cues and ability to move their body and their comfort level. You might also look at that in terms of interoception and proprioception and exteroception. Helping people to become aware, connected and in tune with their bodies, a sort of mindfulness of the body that phsysical movement and health can provide. A more in touch and in tune person. Physical tune up leads to mental-spiritual tune up. Helping people find that. Lots of cues to do, feel, and be with what they do.
A particular lady who has taken my yoga class for about 10 yrs who quite often seems not to be aware of what she is doing nor does she seem to remember well. Sometimes, this has concerned me, thinking, I wish she would remember. OR I wish she would push herself, do more show more, correct herself. She always wants to mimic me. I know she is also hard of hearing caused by a brain tumor. Yet she tells me, I love your class, and I never want to miss it. I want to be that sensitive teacher who even if people don’t conform to my idea of a student, nonetheless they get value from the teaching or training. I need to be sensitive to all styles of all individuals, and try to support them in their particular learning style.
