As the general manager of personal training facility, with over 100 independent trainers that use our gym. I’ve seen a lot of trainers come and go over the last 4 years.
Personal Training is a Business
As a rough guess, out of 100 people wanting to be trainers, only about 20 will become successful. I think it could be that most people that want to be a trainer, underestimate the commitment it takes to be a great trainer. It’s not as simple as obtaining clients and training them. You have to manage a business. There’s a lot of early mornings with late nights, the traveling around the city and also the huge mix of different personalities they encounter. It’s not always a constant flow of income so budgeting is also very crucial to getting started. Once you’re prepared for the business and time management side of things, then you have to work hard at being effective for your clients needs.
No Days Off
You can’t have off days. They’re paying for a premium service, so you have to deliver. Some of my hardest days were when I’m having a rough time in my personal life, but I have to turn up with a smile on my face and give my client my best side every time! When you have 4 or 5 clients in a row, it can be mentally exhausting. The best trainers can handle this.
Passion vs Job
The key to my success is, I genuinely love to train and help people. It is a serious passion and not just a job. I’m constantly learning and tweaking my training methods to make sure I can get the most out of my clients. You can never stop learning because as I’ve witnessed with trainers I manage, their clients get bored with the same routine.
Motivating Clients
Being able to get inside your clients head to find out what makes them tick, so you can motivate them to the best of their abilities, is absolutely paramount to getting the results that they desire.
