I always sit down with a new client for a consultation where we chat about history, goals, limitations or injuries, diet, current exercise, lifestyle, etc. We may also complete a few physical assessments to see where he/she is athletically at the time of our first session, as well as to determine if there are any gaping muscle imbalances/weaknesses. From there, I tailor the workouts according to the client’s goals. Each workout session begins with a 10 minute warmup, and from there we jump into the workout itself. The last five minutes or so we may slow the tempo to cool down, or I may recommend the client stretch or foam roll.
Lindsey is one of my Gaming Labs International athletes (corporate wellness partnership) who has been working with me since January. She is pregnant with her first child and began coming to our corporate wellness group classes to create an exercise regimen that she could continue with during pregnancy. Here’s what she has to say:
“I have never really had an exercise regimen. I would have something going on, would work to achieve it and then quit soon after. Signed up for classes with my sister for her wedding, and then after the wedding — stopped going. Signed up for Tough Mudder, hit the gym hard, did the event — then stopped going. So this last year when my husband and I decided to start a family, I figured I would need to get a regimen in place. That was confirmed during the first doctor’s appointment: “Do you exercise?” “No.” “I encourage you to start.” Well, nothing is more of a goal or more motivating than having a baby. And if the doc says so, then I better get serious! So I joined a walking/running group at work and soon after was introduced to Amy. I am now 28 weeks pregnant, and continue to exercise. I think, “For you baby. For you baby,” when Amy has us do burpees. I’m determined to make this new habit stick long after baby is born.”
Update: Lindsey worked out with us every Tuesday and Thursday up until a week and a half before she gave birth to a healthy baby boy in mid-November! While we miss her at our group sessions, we are so thrilled she had a successful labor that was most definitely assisted by all the squats she did during her pregnancy! Haha
