Train out of your home – The trainer comes to you.
As a trainer, and spin and group fitness instructor, I strive to help individuals feel the same way about fitness and the gym, and I realize this goal can be challenging. I have days in which I would much rather be home lying on the couch after a tough day at work than dressed and ready for a workout. Some days I certainly give myself that luxury, and it is okay for clients to feels this way too! I believe true achievements in fitness come when a healthy lifestyle is created, encouraged by trainers and teachers, so that the good days and the not-so-good days are part of a realistic fitness journey.
I strongly adheres to the idea that everyone’s fitness journey is different, and the journey is truly one that is not a straight road. As both a fitness specialist (training, cycling, and group fitness) and a former college and high school classroom teacher, I have extensive experience with meeting learners “where they are” as opposed to clinging to personal expectations and requiring students and clients to meet my goals. I believe closely listening to clients, always changing up routines, and constant self-evaluation make teaching and training the best jobs in the world.
I have worked for Neptune Fitness, a home-gym personal training company, U.S. Fitness (Onelife) and Life Time gyms previously in Northern Virginia, where I was a spin instructor, and she was most recently a personal trainer and spin instructor at Woxsen University in Hyderabad, India working with students, faculty, staff, and the men’s football (soccer) team.

A client can expect the initial question that is reflective of care and consideration: How are you feeling today? How was your weekend? How was your daughter’s birthday party? We would then chat about the client’s fitness routine and nutrition for the time in between sessions, and then we would discuss what the present session will comprise and why particular routine/exercises have been recommended. We then begin with a warm-up based on static and dynamic stretches after myofascial foam rolling, paying attention to particular areas of discomfort. We then begin the session. I am always looking out for form, technique, breathing patterns, and I am never on my cell phone, a practice some of my own trainers have performed while I worked out. I will also always demonstrate movements and modify according to my client ‘s ability and/or how the client is feeling on that particular day. We then perform yoga- or pilates- based strength stretches and end with static stretches and a breathing mindfulness exercise. I tell the client how well he/she trained, and offer any constructive criticism, such as: “I love your work today, but I’d also really like to have you slow down your tempo on some of your upper body exercises.” Of course I would explain why slowing down is important to the client’s fitness goals.
My most recent client in Alexandria, Virginia is male, in his mid-thirties, and he had not exercised regularly in many years before working with me. After a thorough interview showing I was a true listener, he performed an OHSA, and I evaluated many under active and over active muscles. I observed that he had symptoms of kyphosis in addition to being about 20 pounds overweight. I designed a strength and conditioning program pinpointing his posture with stability, balance, and strength, and showing him correct form in all of his exercises. We also, of course, incorporated nutrition and cardio into his program. After two months, his weight had decreased, and his posture was improving. He told me that over the Thanksgiving holiday, he had traveled home to visit his family, and they had noticed the changes in his fitness and told him how good he looked. For me, this was also true success.
